Lego Movie - exam questions

To what extent does Propp's character theory fit The Lego Movie poster campaign (5)

Propps theory fits the Lego Movie posters because they each represent the different characters. For example, Wyldestyle represents the princess and the helper in the movie. However, she challenges the stereotype of the typical princess as they are usually the scared ones that need saving. However, her facial expression suggests that she is very calm and this is reflected in the fact that she is also the helper.
Emmet is portrayed as the hero is the film. However, his facial expressions suggest he is scared, unlike a typical hero. This shows how he is an unconventional hero who also has lots of helpers. I believe that The Lego Movie loosely follows Propp's character theory as there are different characters and roles that relate to the theory but they do not conform to the attitudes that these characters typically play in his theory.

Analyse how genre codes have been used in the Lego Movie poster campaign to appeal to a family audience (10)

The Lego Movie is an action/comedy and we can see this through the posters. In the main poster, it is packed with lots of action codes. For example, all the characters are running through the streets away from danger suggesting something bad is happening. However, the costumes e.g. the Batman costume will attract a younger and older audience as they will all recognise him.

The codes of a comedy movie have been used to attract a family audience because the facial expressions on the character posters are very exaggerated. This will help attract the younger target audience. Furthermore, an older audience would be attracted to the characters they see and not so much the colour. For example the use of Vitruvius which is an intertextual reference to lord of the rings.

The codes of action have been used to attract an older audience as there are lots of intertextual references including 'independence day' and 'Catwoman'. This will appeal to an older audience because these movies were aimed at them, therefore the older audience and not the younger will see this feature.

  2. Q1 - 5/5
Q2 - 5/10 Your final point is a little confusing - Furthermore, the an older audience would be attracted to the characters they see and not so much the colour. For example the use of vitruvius which is an intertextual reference to lord of the rings.

Please read over this and make a bit more sense. I don't know what you mean by "not so much colour"? Are you suggesting that older people can't see colours??
