Analyse how mise-en-scene
is used in the extract to create meaning.
Refer to at least two examples from the extract
in your answer
Nathans character is sat in a wheelchair. This shows that he is weak and vulnerable and less capable to do anything. Nathan is also representing those in society who are less fortunate. Another example is that Ryan and Jake are wearing police officer outfits. This highlights their job in society, their superiority and represents the police.
Analyse how far the extract is stereotypical to
gender.
This extract is stereotpical to gender because we only see the two male police officers dealing with the situation, perhaps inferring that they are more able than females. Furthermore, in the hospital, Nathan's seen as a 'druggie' who has also self harmed and could suggest that it is only typical from men to self harm and not women.
The mother character in Cuffs is female and is represented as extremely emotional. This is stereotypical as females are represented as weak and unstable. Furthermore, the woman is sitting down while talking about her child when the man is standing up. This could portray the dominance he has over her through the different levels used. Additionally, the low camera angle makes him seem superior to the audience and to the woman, making her seem inferior. In contrast they are both wearing smart, sophisticated work clothes which could show that they are both equal.
In conclusion, the extract is stereotypical to gender as although there are few moment where men and women are portrayed as equal, most of the time they are portrayed in a stereotypical way.
